On Things Lost

I may not know all the details about the history of the LeBeau plantation. Sure, it was an antebellum plantation home turned hotel turned abandoned historic monument. But I don't know who the owners were at any given time or why it fell into utter disrepair. Not that the full history of it isn't important, and not that I haven't read up on it a little. It's just that LeBeau and I, we sort of have our own history.

Gettin' Back to It

Since the longer, deeply personal post is still in the works and might not come out for a little while longer, I figured I might as well start here with a micro post. And here it is.

Logical, Rational, and Reasonable

If it doesn't make sense, my mind cannot comprehend it. It's as simple as that.

Cause and Effect - A discussion

Déjà Vu

The human brain is a fascinating thing. All of who we are - memories, personality, perceptions - it's all stored up there in that gray matter, held together by synapses and neurons. Science has yet to fully understand it, but there's no need really... we go on day after day, and it just does what it does without us giving a thought (ironically enough) to what it's doing. Admittedly, though, it is mystifying, and once in a while something will happen up there that draws our attention back to it... and makes us go "wow... what is that?"

Movie Review: The Silver Linings Playbook [2012]

Some writers can pound out a meaningful film review within moments of seeing a movie. Of course, others are equally adept at punching out drivel immediately after, too, but that's neither here nor there. Me, though, I can't write about a movie until after I've processed what I've seen and heard, which means that often, by the time I get around to writing about a movie I saw in the theater (or "at the show" as we say here in the Greater New Orleans area), it's likely on Netflix. In fact, I still have Crazy Stupid Love saved as a draft... from 2011. That one is just awaiting a re-watch so I can re-process it because I loved it THAT MUCH. It's coming... wait. for. it.

So maybe I'll never be more than a couch potato movie critic. So be it. Another thing is that I - so far - only write about movies that I like for one reason or another. I write what's in my heart, and that's good enough for me. That said, the latest flick to move me was The Silver Linings Playbook starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence  and Robert De Niro. And when I say "move" I mean... "shake." At the end of the movie, I was shaking. That has to be a good sign...

Before we go any further, I really shouldn't call this a movie review. It's really more of a post-viewing reflection based on what I saw. No summaries, no synopses. I highly recommend it to anyone, and you should certainly watch it to know what it's about, but that's not what this is. No spoilers here either. :)

And without any further ado...

Little Treasures

Hurricane Katrina was 7 years, 4 months ago. That's a long time, eh? I don't really talk about it much but not because I don't think about it or feel some after-effect on a regular basis. I don't talk about it because people aren't really interested, and who can blame them? If it didn't touch you in a very real, personal way, if you didn't lose everything you owned in an instant, along with your community, and/or people you loved, then there's really not much to talk about. Allow me, however, to give you a lil bit of a different perspective on the aftermath.

Twenty Thirteen: The First Post

NYE 2012/13
And just like that, it was gone. 2012 rolled in and rolled out like the evening tide, and here we are. What this year holds in store for each of us is yet to discover, but one thing is certain - we're at least partly responsible for where the times take us. So, on that note and without further ado, here it is - my new year resolution: "Work to live, not live to work."

Plainly. Simply. Resolved.

One thing that was very conspicuously missing from my last post's Notable Moments of 2012 was my brand baby new job! After just over a year pimping insurance for State Farm, I landed a job doing logistics for an ocean forwarder with a myriad of perks. Otherwise stated, I deliver the goods. ;) My experience at State Farm was invaluable, and it served a very worthwhile purpose, but this latest opportunity is just jam-packed with exciting possibilities. It's 10 minutes from home, I'm learning an entirely new field to me (which keeps me engaged at a very high level), and I get to leave work earlier (and be home much earlier). For this reason, there couldn't be a more perfect time to resolve to dedicate this extra time to doing things that I love to do.

I've always had a tendancy to Take Care of Biz rather than set aside time to do what I enjoy - like writing, for example. And I recognize that an extra 30 minutes to an hour of free time gained every evening can easily disappear into nothingness - kind of like a dollar-an-hour raise... it just sorta... vanishes... unless you're intentional with it and invest it apart from your spending money. So, that's what I'm doing. I'm investing my extra time each day to me. :D TCB-ing is necessary (TCB - Y? Because somebody's gotta. Ooo... I want some FroYo...), but so is doing what I want to do. Here's to life. *Cheers* :)
